Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) at Coquitlam Physio & Health
At Coquitlam Physio & Health, we’ve redefined the role of Massage Therapy in the recovery process. Our RMTs operate at the intersection of neurological science and elite athletic performance. By integrating specialized tools like IASTM Fascial Therapy with advanced clinical techniques like PNF stretching and joint mobilization, we don’t just temporarily soothe muscles—we structurally change how your body moves and heals.
Whether we are helping a pro-athlete from the BC Lions maintain their competitive edge, or supporting a patient through the complex physical layers of concussion recovery and MS, our approach is rooted in measurable outcomes. We believe in a collaborative model where manual therapy is a precision tool used to unlock restricted movement, desensitize the nervous system, and accelerate your return to peak function.
Our RMT department is built on these three clinical pillars of care:
High-Performance Sports & Fascial Care
Leveraging experience with the BC Lions and Whitecaps, we utilize IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) and deep tissue techniques to resolve chronic scar tissue and rotator cuff restrictions. This pillar is dedicated to athletes—from bodybuilders to weekend warriors—who require aggressive, targeted recovery to excel in their sport.
Neurological & Complex Recovery
Inspired by personal recovery journeys, this pillar focuses on the "brain-body" connection. We provide specialized care for Post-Concussion Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and chronic tension headaches. By utilizing myofascial release and calming the sympathetic nervous system, we help patients navigate the physical toll of complex neurological conditions.
Structural Mobility & Individualized Home Care
True relief requires a plan that extends beyond the clinic doors. We utilize PNF stretching and joint mobilizations to restore structural alignment, then provide every patient with a custom-catered "Home Care" blueprint. This ensures that the mobility gained on our table is maintained throughout your daily life, hiking the Coquitlam trails, or returning to the office.
Specialized RMT Programs
Our clinical RMT programs bridge the gap between pro-athlete performance care and complex neurological recovery, utilizing evidence-based techniques to resolve chronic pain and restore functional movement.
- Sports Massage & IASTM : Bodybuilders and athletes needing Fascial Therapy and scar tissue release.
- ICBC Post-Accident Care : Relieving whiplash-related tension and headaches following a motor vehicle accident.
- Deep Tissue & Trigger Point : Chronic "desk neck," stubborn knots, and localized musculoskeletal pain.
- Neurological Massage : Patients managing MS, Parkinson's, or recovering from Concussion symptoms.
- Myofascial & PNF Stretching : Improving joint mobility and flexibility for hikers, boarders, and active seniors.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RMT covered by ICBC and private insurance?
Yes. We offer direct billing for most major private insurers (Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Canada Life, etc.). For ICBC claims, RMT is a key part of recovery; however, please contact us with your claim number to confirm your current coverage and pre-authorized sessions.
What is IASTM Fascial Therapy and how does it feel?
IASTM involves using specialized medical-grade tools to “scrape” or release restricted fascia and scar tissue. While it can feel intense, it is exceptionally effective for chronic tendonitis, rotator cuff injuries, and old sports injuries that haven’t responded to traditional massage.
Can massage therapy really help with concussion recovery?
Absolutely. We specialize in this area. Post-concussion symptoms often involve severe neck tension and “cervicogenic headaches.” Targeted RMT reduces this physical stress, helping the nervous system shift from a “fight or flight” state into a healing state.
Which private insurance providers do you bill directly?
We offer on-site direct billing for all major providers, including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, and Desjardins. Our administrative team uses the Jane booking platform and Telus Adjudicare to process your claims instantly at the time of your appointment.
Do your RMTs work with professional athletes?
Yes. Our team has extensive experience treating elite performers, including work with the BC Lions and Whitecaps. We apply those same high-performance protocols—focusing on range of motion and rapid recovery—to all of our active patients and bodybuilders.
I have a neurological condition like MS; is massage safe for me?
Yes. We have clinical experience treating patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s. We focus on managing muscle spasticity, improving circulation, and reducing the chronic fatigue associated with neurological conditions through gentle, anatomy-based techniques.
What is the difference between "Relaxation" and "Clinical" Massage?
While relaxation massage focuses on general stress, our Clinical RMT approach is results-driven. We use deeper pressure, PNF stretching, and joint mobilizations to fix the root cause of your pain, whether it’s “desk neck,” a sports injury, or chronic sciatica.
Do I have to undress for my RMT appointment?
Your comfort is our priority. While most therapeutic massages are performed on the skin with oil, techniques like PNF stretching and joint mobilizations can be performed through loose, comfortable athletic clothing if you prefer.
What should I do after my treatment?
Each session includes individualized home care. Our RMTs will provide you with specific stretches or movements to “lock in” the gains made on the table. We also recommend staying hydrated to help your body process the metabolic changes that occur during deep tissue work.
