Acupuncture at Coquitlam Physio & Health
At Coquitlam Physio & Health, acupuncture is not a standalone add-on. It is a precision tool inside a full rehabilitation system. Our Registered Acupuncturists (R.Ac) work alongside our physiotherapists, chiropractors, kinesiologists and massage therapists so that every needle placed serves a clear clinical goal: reduce pain, restore movement and get you back to the life you want to live.
Whether you are recovering from a car accident, managing a frozen shoulder, carrying stubborn tension from a desk job, or trying to keep training through a nagging injury, our acupuncturists tailor each treatment to the root cause of your discomfort. We combine classical acupuncture with Tui Na, cupping, Gua Sha and modern muscle and joint techniques, and we bring an active, patient-centred approach that never feels intimidating, even if it is your first time.
Our acupuncture department is built on these three clinical pillars of care:
01
Injury Recovery & Pain Relief
From acute sports injuries to chronic pain that has lingered for years. We treat neck and shoulder tension, back pain, frozen shoulder and mobility restrictions using acupuncture combined with Tui Na, cupping and Gua Sha to relax overworked tissue, improve circulation and restore your natural range of motion.
02
Sports Performance & Active Recovery
Built for people who move. For gym-goers, athletes and weekend warriors dealing with training-related injuries, soreness or plateaus in mobility. We use acupuncture to support faster recovery, return to sport and long-term performance so you can keep doing what makes you feel like yourself.
03
Whole-Person & TCM Care
Pain is rarely the whole story. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, this pillar addresses the internal patterns beneath physical symptoms: stress-related tension, fatigue, insomnia, digestive concerns and frequent headaches, restoring balance alongside your physical recovery.
Specialized Acupuncture Programs
Our acupuncture programs bridge the gap between injury rehabilitation and whole-body wellness, using evidence-informed techniques to resolve pain, restore movement and support long-term health.
- Musculoskeletal Acupuncture: Neck and shoulder tension, back pain, frozen shoulder and joint stiffness.
- ICBC Post-Accident Care: Relieving whiplash, headaches and soft tissue pain following a motor vehicle accident.
- Sports & Training Recovery: Gym and sport-related injuries, soreness and return-to-sport support for active patients.
- Tui Na, Cupping & Gua Sha: Manual and adjunct therapies that release tight tissue and improve circulation.
- TCM Wellness Acupuncture: Stress, insomnia, digestive concerns, fatigue and headaches treated at the root.
- First-Time Acupuncture: A welcoming, low-pressure introduction for patients new to needling.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Is acupuncture covered by ICBC and private insurance?
Yes. Acupuncture is a pre-approved treatment under ICBC’s enhanced care model, and we offer direct billing for most major private insurers including Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life and Desjardins. Contact us with your claim number or plan details and our team will confirm coverage before your first visit.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients feel very little. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, far thinner than an injection needle. You may notice a brief tap on insertion and a dull, heavy or warm sensation once the needle is in place, which is a normal sign the treatment is working. Our acupuncturists check in throughout the session and adjust to your comfort.
I have never tried acupuncture. What should I expect?
Your first visit starts with a conversation. We want to understand your injury, your history and what you want to get back to. Treatment is explained step by step, and nothing is done without your say-so. Many first-time patients tell us the experience was far more relaxed than they expected.
What is the difference between acupuncture and IMS or dry needling?
IMS and dry needling are performed by our physiotherapists and target specific tight muscle bands to reset the nervous system. Acupuncture is performed by a Registered Acupuncturist and draws on Traditional Chinese Medicine, treating both the local injury and the broader patterns behind it. The two complement each other, and our team will recommend the right fit.
What are Tui Na, cupping and Gua Sha?
Tui Na is a form of Chinese medical massage that works on muscles, joints and connective tissue. Cupping uses gentle suction to lift tissue and increase circulation. Gua Sha is a scraping technique that releases restricted fascia and stubborn tension. Our acupuncturists integrate these into treatment when they will help you recover faster.
Can acupuncture help with stress, sleep or digestion?
Yes. Alongside pain and injury work, our acupuncturists regularly support patients with stress-related tension, insomnia, digestive concerns, fatigue and frequent headaches. Treatment follows Traditional Chinese Medicine principles to restore balance across the whole person, not just the symptom.
Can I combine acupuncture with physiotherapy, chiropractic or massage?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. Because our acupuncturists work in the same clinic as our physiotherapists, chiropractors, kinesiologists and RMTs, your care is coordinated. Many patients book acupuncture on the same day as another service so they only travel once.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the condition and how long it has been present. Acute injuries often respond within a few visits, while chronic pain or long-standing patterns may need a structured course. Your acupuncturist will outline a clear plan after your first assessment and adjust it as you progress.
